Hoooooray! I didn't expect to see this movie in german theaters. This will be great, Ellen on the big screen. I'll see her with totally different eyes now, because my first encounter was in Inception and I didn't know her then.

On the one hand, it's great that we finally get a theatrical release here in Germany and I will surely support this by buying a ticket. However, do you really think there are a lot of people who are interested in seeing a two years old movie? A true fan already owns the DVD, which seems to be available everywhere but Germany (UK, France, Netherlands)

I think most people don't even know how old a movie actually is when it's released in theater, especially for independent movies. Of course I have the DVD, it's more the big screen thing I'm excited about. Even though it would be dubbed but Ellens german voice fits quite good, I think. It would be a while until Ellen will be in german theaters again after Whip It. I don't see SUPER at the horizon.

It's a little off-topic but Whip It may be having a bit of a resurgence. The Guardian (UK) features it in "Film: Our kick-ass screen heroines of the year" : http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2010/dec/18/film-heroines-2010Quote: The Girls of Whip It
Bliss Cavenda. Drew Barrymore's roller-derby flick didn't exactly tear the roof off the multiplexes, but it reassured small-town girls that there's more to life than beauty pageants. Future generations could look back on it as the Expendables of anti-Hollywood role modelling: Juliette Lewis, Kristen Wiig, Ellen Page, Eve, Drew herself. Their rink names said it all: Smashley Simpson, Bloody Holly, Maggie Mayhem, Babe Ruthless. The Hurl Scouts were proof that feminism and bone-crunching bitchiness can peacefully co-exist. Well, co-exist, anyway.

I think that depends on the german distributor. Does anyone know who this is? It seems there's still no regular voice for Ellen. But I liked the Inception voice as well as that she had in Juno. I didn't watch the other movies in german, because I love her real voice. Code:
Inception Ariadne Anne Helm
Peacock Maggie Manja Doering
Smart People Vanessa Wetherhold Manja Doering
The Stone Angel Arlene Katrin Decker
Juno Juno MacGuff Tanya Kahana
The Tracey Fragments Tracey Berkowitz Anja Stadlober
An American Crime Sylvia Likens Yvonne Greitzke
X-Men - Der letzte Widerstand Kitty Pryde Anja Stadlober
Hard Candy Hayley Stark Manja Doering
ReGenesis [TV-Serie] Lilith Sandstrom Jacqueline Belle
I stole this list from here: http://215072.homepagemodules.de/t51114 ... -Page.html

My personal fave for her sync is Anne Helm. She did a really great job in Inception. Almost hits Ellen's voice tone...

Wow...surprised it took this long to get released in theatres in Germany. I know other countries in Europe have already shown it in theatres....surprised that it will be May 2011 for its German release.
Will they still keep the US title Whip It....or will they change it like France did ("Bliss" was the title in France)?

Quote: Wow...surprised it took this long to get released in theatres in Germany. That's because many germans are pretty lazy when it comes to learn a foreign language well enough to watch movies. (not as lazy as french people, though) .. no offense Whereas in many other european countries the movie is just shown in english, sometimes with subtitles. But it seems germans even won't have subtitles in cinema, so everything has to be dubbed in order to get people into the movie theaters. Worst of all, you rarely find a movie theater which shows movies in its original language. I think the title will be "Whip It". The french HAVE TO change the title ... see above

Americans are the worst in learning foreign languages...beleive me I think Germans prefer to watch movies translated into German that seeing subtitles...which can be very annoyning no matter what language. Whip It probably presents some translation issues because of the sport of roller derby...and translating the English "slang" terms into German equivalents

Yeah, I too am surprised by this late release. Almost 2 years (19 months) after its original release in the U.S. A proper localization usually doesn't take more than 6 months, often it's less than 2.

I think only since Inception they became interested in releasing this movie. Like it happened with some of her older movies after her success with Juno.

Like? Imho "Hard Candy" was her breakthrough (and for that matter "worth" being released worldwide) and this movie was released prior (06/29/06) to Juno (03/20/08) in Germany. Anywho, I'm still looking foward to Whip It's German theatrical release. "Whip it"'s German title is going to be: "Roller Girl - Manchmal ist die schiefe Bahn der richtige Weg" xDDDDDD

You kidding, right!? ... google ... google ... no you not. Why do german distributors keep messing up film titles? It's a shame! And the tagline ... Oh what the heck, it'll be cool to see Ellen on the big screen anyway, even though I'll probably squirm half of the movie due to the german dubbing.

For those who still don't know it, the German release has been postponed for a third time and is now set for "Fall 2011" That's so... ridiculous

Bummer about the Whip It delay in Germany
Interesting is that I saw Whip It DVDs in Sweden...so obviously they have already released it for theatres
In France, Whip It was titled "Bliss"....do not know why some countries keep the original...some change it.

Not sure...since I did not buy it or see it (I could not play it in North America). I noticed they had the DVD in a shop at a Swedish "Rasta" autohof-type of place However, Sweden tends to use sub titles instead of dubbing....their TV does this with American and British TV shows....they are in English w Swedish sub titles. I would figure they do the same for films....and they used the original American title (Whip It) on the DVD.

Yap. That sounds plausible.
